Golf Simulator FAQ

Drawn from the questions simulator communities actually ask, answered from the same manufacturer figures the tools use. Where a tool settles the question for your room, the answer links to it: the room calculator, the projector calculator and the dimensions chart between them cover most of what follows.

Frequently asked questions

How much space do I need for a golf simulator?
By monitor type: a beside-ball camera works from about 13 ft of depth, 10 ft of width and a swingable ceiling. Radar needs about 15 ft of depth. Overhead units follow a 16 ft deep, 13 ft wide recommended room with a 9 to 10 ft mount band. The dimensions chart has every figure on one page.
Is a 9 foot ceiling enough for a golf simulator?
For golfers up to about 5 ft 6 in, usually. To 6 ft 1 in, 9.5 ft is the comfortable line and 9 ft is tight for a driver. Above that, plan on 10 ft. No manufacturer publishes a swing ceiling; the taped-wall test in the ceiling guide is the deciding check.
Can I use a radar launch monitor in a short room?
Not well. Radar units sit 6 to 9 ft behind the ball and need at least 8 ft of flight, so under about 15 ft of depth the geometry does not close. A beside-ball camera is the class built for short rooms.
Why does my ball bounce back off the screen so hard?
Bounce back is tension and gap. A screen hung drum-tight with too little space behind it returns the ball at speed. The screen makers' manuals call for 6 to 12 in of clearance behind a standard enclosure (12 to 16 in pro) and a screen with some give. Loosen before you add power.
Why is my shadow in the projected image?
Your projector sits behind your hitting position, so your body is in the beam. The fix is geometry: a shorter throw ratio, a smaller image, or the projector mounted further forward. The projector calculator runs this check from your hitting distance.
I am left handed. What changes?
Width, mostly. A beside-ball camera unit moves to your other side, so the hitting position and its clearance mirror too. In a mixed household, an overhead unit is the only class where nothing moves between golfers. Centred setups for both handednesses want about 15 ft of width.
Does mat thickness really eat my ceiling?
Yes, inch for inch: a 1.5 in mat and stance stack raises the golfer, and the swing arc rises with them. Measure your ceiling from the top of the mat you will stand on, not from the slab.
How far should I stand from the screen?
8 ft is the makers' minimum ball flight for radar setups and a good default everywhere; 9 to 10 ft is Uneekor's overhead band; camera setups work a little closer. Further feels safer and reads better, nearer makes the image feel bigger. The room calculator counts your choice inside the depth verdict.
