Sim Room Fit

Golf Simulator Room Size Calculator

One room can pass for one launch monitor and fail for another, because each type uses the space differently: radar sits behind you, a camera sits beside the ball, and an overhead unit lives on the ceiling. Enter your room once and get a separate verdict for each type, with the dimension that limits you named in plain words.

Measure the room empty, wall to wall. If a garage door opener, beam or duct hangs below the ceiling, use the height under it where you will swing.

How the room verdicts are calculated

Each verdict sums the segments the manufacturers themselves publish. Radar (Garmin's Approach R10, Rapsodo's MLM2PRO, FlightScope's Mevo class) needs its unit 6 to 9 feet behind the ball, at least 8 feet of ball flight, and about a foot of clearance behind the screen: a 15 foot minimum, comfortable at 19. A beside-ball camera (SkyTrak class) needs no space behind you, so its total is swing clearance plus flight plus screen clearance: 13 feet minimum, 16 comfortable. An overhead unit (Uneekor class) follows Uneekor's own recommended room: 16 feet deep minimum, with the unit mounted 9 to 10 feet up. Width follows SkyTrak's 10 foot minimum room and Uneekor's 13 to 15 foot recommendation. Ceiling bands are planned by the tallest golfer: 9 feet up to 5 ft 6 in, 9.5 feet to 6 ft 1 in, 10 feet above that. Every figure and its source is on the methodology page.

Worked examples

The spare bedroom

16 ft long, 12 ft wide, 9.5 ft ceiling, golfer 5 ft 10 in.

Radar tight, camera fits, overhead tight: the camera class is the natural buy

The short basement

12 ft long, 10 ft wide, 8.5 ft ceiling.

No class fits as given: depth blocks all three, and the ceiling only suits irons

The two car garage

20 ft long, 18 ft wide, 10 ft ceiling.

All three classes fit, so the choice turns on budget and data, not space

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum room size for a golf simulator?
It depends on the monitor type. A beside-ball camera can work from about 13 feet of depth and 10 feet of width. Radar needs about 15 feet of depth. Overhead units follow a 16 foot deep, 13 foot wide recommended room. Ceiling is separate: plan on 9 to 10 feet by golfer height.
Is 9 feet of ceiling enough for a golf simulator?
For many golfers, yes for irons and a careful driver; for a golfer over about 6 ft 1 in, it is tight. The ceiling guide on this site walks through it, and the test that settles it is a slow driver swing under a taped mark at your ceiling height.
Why does radar need so much more depth?
The unit sits 6 to 9 feet behind the ball to watch it, then still needs at least 8 feet of ball flight in front of you. A camera unit sits beside the ball instead, so almost all of your depth is flight and swing room.
My ceiling is high enough but a beam hangs lower. Which height counts?
The height where you swing. If the beam crosses your swing area, measure under the beam, or move the hitting position so the swing clears it.
